What is a congenital birth defect? A congenital birth defect is any change to one or more part of the body that occurs either prior to birth, during birth, or within one month after birth. These birth defects generally have a grave effect on the infant and can hamper critical development as well as functional ability. They are also known as congenital disorders, congenital diseases, or congenital anomalies. It’s important to note that the term “congenital disorder” is a term that has fallen out of favor within the medical community and may not refer to a genetic disorder. What Causes Congenital Birth Defects?

According to the Center For Disease Control and Prevention nearly 1 out of every 33 babies born is born with a congenital birth defect. A congenital birth defect is a major condition that causes structural changes in part of the body that occurs either before birth, during birth, or within a month after birth. These defects usually have harsh, negative impact on the baby’s health, ability to function, and overall development. Congenital birth defects are also the leading cause of infant mortality, as they account for over 1 out of every 5 deaths. What is Congenital Birth Defects?

Congenital is a medical term, referring to something existing before, at birth, or during the first month of life. It doesn’t matter how or why it was caused, the only important thing to understand when discussing the congenital part of a congenital birth defect is the WHEN. Congenital birth defects may be the result of one or a combination of several abnormal factors including: genetics, the uterus, infection, chromosomal (of the chromosomes), or morpoegenesis. Depending on the interaction and severity of the prenatal and post-natal environments the actual congenital birth defects will obviously vary. A few examples of congenital birth defects include cleft palates, cleft lips, spina bifida, Down syndrome, and heart defects all of which are among the most common.
